Contract: Strategy Lead
Sheffield Street Tree Partnership 2026 -2027

People that haven't visited Sheffield laugh when I say that the city is uniquely good at trees, but it has more trees per person than any other city in the UK. 10 years ago it was home to significant protests due to the plan to fell a large proportion of the city's street trees. The protestors won and the felling was stopped, but it caused damage to the city's reputation and understandably; residual anger around the way things were managed.

10 years on, and through the work of the Partnership, a lot of bridge building has been achieved. I don't think it should be underestimated how much skill and knowledge there is in the city  - there always has been - and I feel privileged to hold a role that doesn't just address the issues surrounding the dispute, but builds on the passion and enthusiasm from the former campaigners, volunteers, LA officers, academics and organisations to make Sheffield a national beacon of good practice in Urban Forestry, for people, trees and society.

Contract: Consultant
Tree Equity Knowledge Exchange Day

In partnership with the University of Sheffield's Urban Tree Observatory, we brought together practitioners, researchers, and policymakers to explore what it will take to advance tree equity meaningfully in our places.

Tree equity isn’t simply about planting more trees, but about ensuring that everyone can experience the benefits that trees bring, regardless of where they live. It is about addressing climate, health, and social equity together, using trees as part of a wider approach to creating fairer, greener, and healthier communities.

A detailed report can be downloaded below.

Key recommendations:

  1. Clear metrics and standards are needed to drive resources and accountability.
  2. A holistic, people-focused approach will ensure tree equity addresses wider environmental and social inequalities.
  3. Planting alone is insufficient; engagement, education, and protection are vital for trees to be beneficial for and valued by communities.
  4. Integrated planning and cross-sector collaboration can address competing priorities.
  5. Trees must be seen as critical public health, climate, and equity infrastructure, not an optional extra.
  6. Long-term funding is key to long-term success for both communities and trees

Contract: Consultant
Trees and People Knowledge Exchange Day

In partnership with the University of Sheffield's Urban Tree Observatory, we ran this event to share knowledge and insights about building positive relationships between people and trees. The three themes were:

  1. Better understood, better protected. How do we increase knowledge in arboriculture and urban forestry in the public sphere?
  2. Bright ideas: What techniques can we use to inspire all members of society to engage with urban forestry?
  3. Tree Wars - How can we depolarise opinions around trees and work better together?
